Registax
Registax is an application that can stack lunar or planetary images for improvements in quality, but its real strength lies in its sharpening capability. I actually have never managed to use this application for stacking, and have always done that in a separate application before bringing the stack to Registax.
The first time I ever saw the effect of wavelet sharpening in Registax I was genuinely amazed. It seemed like some kind of witchcraft, but the reality is it's just a mathematical manipulation of the data captured in the images. I won't pretend that I understand how the process works, but there is no denying the impact it can have on the final image.
As with any tool, there is a certain amount of learning and practice that is required to get good results. It is very easy to get carried away and overdo the sharpening, which usually results in a quite unpleasant effect. It does take time to learn to avoid falling into this trap.
