QHY5L-II-M

This camera is almost identical to the colour version QHY5L-II-C. The only difference is the lack of the Bayer matrix over the sensor. In astronomy terms, the removal of the Bayer matrix is actually an advantage because it makes the camera more sensitive by not filtering out any of the light coming through the scope.

The increased sensitivity of this camera makes it suitable for guiding using my Off Axis Guider with the Edge HD8 Schmidt Cassegrain scope. The field of view through the OAG is very small, so high sensitivity is needed to be able to detect stars in the frame on the occasions where there are no bright stars available to guide on.

Despite the colour version of this camera having been discontinued in 2022, the monochrome version is still a popular choice of guide camera. You can learn more about it at the QHYCCD website.
